Three of the recently adopted charites in terms of donations from Christchurch are detailed here:
Mysmall help – Peru.
Leander Hollings, of Ilkley, founded this charity. Her principle work and concern always centres around children. Projects have been established in Nepal and Africa and some of the craft work produced has been sold through our Fairtrade stall. Leander is now working in Cusco, Peru, providing aid to those affected by the floods and landslides which devastated the area last January. Many children were already malnourished before this disaster struck, the immediate need was for food, blankets and tents. In the longer term Leander is committed to developing self sufficiency, patterned on previous work she has established.
InnerCHANGE – Los Angeles.
Alastair (son of Richard and Jennifer) and Catharine Rundle and their daughters are part of the InnerCHANGE team in Los Angeles. Alastair recently took over as team leader. The movement is described as a Christian order among the poor with communities in poor areas around the world, offering friendship and enouraging self reliance, building the confidence of those who are often judged worthless until local leaders emerge to continue the work the teams have begun. A quote from Alastair sums up the ethos:
'We’re beginning the slow, gentle and thorough work of getting to know our neighbours starting where they are: Go to the people, live among them, learn from them, love them; start with what they have, build on what they know; but the best of leaders, when they leave, the people will say, “We did it ourselves.”'
Maternity Worldwide - Ethiopia.
Adrian Brown (son of Stan) and some of his hospital colleagues offer their personal medical expertise and training skill to help develop maternity services for Western Ethiopia. Maternity Worldwide worked in partnership with the Gimbie Adventist Hospital to establish a Maternal Health Programme in an effort to reduce women’s deaths during pregnancy and childbirth. As well as upgrading facilities and equipment at the hospital and rural clinics, the project establishes community health education projects and women’s income generating projects. In the longer term it is hoped to extend the project to other developing countries in East Africa.
