On Sunday mornings we have two distinctly different services.  The earlier one, On-Line@9, is a lively service of praise and interactive worship for all ages, with a particular emphasis on making worship accessible to all ages without losing its power. As its name suggests, it starts at 9:00am and finishes at about 9:50am, leaving much of the day for other family activities.

Each service is led by one of five teams of worship leaders and provides an informal and welcoming approach to worship.

The singing is lively, led by a small music group with a variety of instruments, and there is always room to include others – musicians take note!

Teaching is based on the Roots materials, a joint Churches venture based on the Revised Common Lectionary (a three year plan of bible readings), and is adapted to make it suitable for all ages. Themes are often introduced with a short sketch or dramatised reading, and most usually explored in a Group Time when the congregation splits into appropriate age groups, currently 3-4, 5-7, 8-11, 12+ and adult.

Occasionally, communion is celebrated when particularly fitting to the theme.

There is a crèche for very young children (0-2) within the Sanctuary, allowing parents to partake fully in adult groups whilst keeping an ear on their children!

Projection software is used, with screens showing the words for songs and prayers, and appropriate images to enhance worship.

After worship all are welcome to stay for fellowship and refreshments in the Coffee Centre and visitors have a chance to find out more about us.

The music group plays contemporary Christian music and traditional songs with a modern twist.

At 10.30am on Sunday the service tends to follow a more traditional form of preaching service.  Singing is led by the choir, Christchurch Singers, with occasional anthems. We encourage the involvement of members of the congregation in reading scripture and  leading prayers; worship leaders occasionally share the service with the minister or preacher. Again, fellowship over coffee after the service is an opportunity to meet with friends, or make new ones;  there is a 'welcome table' for newcomers to introduce themselves and meet us informally.

Sunday evening worship at 6.30pm is much more intimate, with a much smaller congregation. Like the 10.30am service, it often follows the traditional structure of a preaching service. However, on the last Sunday of alternate months (January, March, May, etc) we have an ecumenical service in the style of the Taizé Community. This is a reflective service, with repetitive chants and relatively long periods of silence for prayer and meditation. It is very popular, with people coming from well outside the Ilkley area, in addition to Ilkley folk.

We have monthly Prayer, Praise and Preaching services at 6.30pm with music led by the worship band.  Prayer support is also given through our prayer fellowship and housegroups.

Icons and candles are traditional in the Taize service.

Holy Communion is celebrated monthly at the 10.30am and 6.30pm services, and at other times as appropriate. In addition to these Sunday services we have two regular mid-week services.  The Shoppers’ service is held every Friday at 10.30am and lasts for only 20 minutes. It is ecumenical in approach and is led by our own Minister or one of our Local Preachers, or by a Minister from one of the other churches in Ilkley. It provides a place of refreshment and worship in the midst of a busy day.

Music and other resources in worship

As with worship, variety in music is accepted and welcomed at Christchurch, Ilkley.

The worship group, which plays for our On -Line@9  and Prayer & Praise services, currently consists of piano, keyboard, drums, flute, clarinet and violin. This group has grown since its formation in 2002 and we welcome their contribution to worship.

Christchurch Singers is the name of the choir which leads singing at the 10.30 service, usually accompanied by the organ and/or grand piano.  Together with the congregation we are truly able to worship through our music, whether it is in singing traditional hymns or modern worship songs or listening to anthems.

Other resources used in worship include a modern audio-visual system which enhances worship for all, and particularly the hard of hearing and visually impaired. As part of our desire to reach the wider community we offer a tape recording of the 10.30am service to the housebound or others unable to attend at weekly worship. A copy of the Order of Service (large print available) is also sent with each tape to enable people to follow readings, hymns, etc in addition to listening to the service.  This ministry is a popular means by which people can share in worship and maintain contact with the Church Family.
